The Spirotiger is new to New Zealand. It is one of the first devices to focus on respiratory endurance training. More specifically it provides endurance training for the diaphram and can result in improved lung function.
Research is showing improvements for individuals with a chronic lung function problem (eg. COPD, asthma ) and for the sports person. The COPD patient may benefit by getting additional degrees of freedom in daily living or profiting from a decrease in adverse respiratory sensations during daily exertions eg. increasing the threshold at which an asthmatic event occurs.
One study tested 30 patients with COPD for 8 weeks (1). The experimental group trained their respiratory system with a device similar to the Spirotiger above for 15 mins per day, 5 days per week for 8 weeks. The experimental group increased significantly in respiratory muscle endurance and exercise capacity. Overall an improved quality of life was reported.
Research into the benefits for athletes is growing. One study with a group of fit young cyclists showed a 4.7 percent improvement in performance over a 40 min time trial, after 20 training sessions (2). Another study with a group of healthy, active subjects showed a decrease in blood lactate concentrations when cycling at the same initial workloads (3).
Training sessions can begin at only 10 minutes and build up to 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times per week.
Our exercise clinic has a spirotiger equipment station set up to save you the expense of buying a complete unit (normally $1250 – $1650 incl GST). You do need to purchase your own personal kit ($70 incl. GST) and then it costs just $15 per session with our ten trip card system. An initial lung function (spirometry) test is required to work out your bag size ($81).
