Monitoring Tidal Volume during an exercise test of increasing intensity can reveal a respiratory limitation.
Tidal Volume is basically the volume of air with each breath that you take. This volume will gradually increase as exercise intensity increases, if everything is normal. However, if the respiratory muscles start to fatigue, this volume will start to decrease as you get shallower with your breathing. This gives a good indication that your respiratory system is limiting your function.
Preparation Notes – to get the most from the test, it is best not to exercise for 24 hours prior to the test. We also recommend that you avoid food and caffeine 3 hours prior to the test. Water is fine. Bring suitable exercise clothing.
