The Programme

Between your first and second visits our consultants design a programme specific to your needs.  This takes time and is therefore not performed during your initial visit.  Analysis of the findings of the assessment need to be considered along with your goals to determine the most appropriate and achievable plan for you.  When you return for your second visit you will go through the exercises with supervision to ensure you understand how to do all of them correctly.

Each programme is individualised with corrective exercises designed specifically for you to reduce pain and restore movement.  Emphasis is placed on functional exercises which involve movement patterns crucial to performing daily tasks of living.  Programmes may include stretching and mobilization exercises, strengthening, aerobic exercise and lifestyle guidance.

Integral to your programme is your understanding of your injury, your body and merging your needs with your goals and lifestyle.  We enjoy passing our knowledge onto you to help you achieve the desired results.

Alongside your corrective exercises, your programme may also include the following:

Manual Handling Education - good posture and being able to squat with proper technique is very important to being able to lift weight with the right body position.  You will learn how to safely handle weight in a variety of ways.

Pain Management - get relief, improve quality of life, and achieve your potential.  Functioning with chronic pain requires an understanding of the biology of pain and for you to understand triggers and self management strategies that can effectively reduce pain levels and allow you to resume activity and life roles.

Stress and Fatigue Management - learning to identify and understand your triggers is the first step in managing them.  Knowing self management strategies can lead to effectively reducing stress levels and the negative impact on your body.

Breathing Re education - you may require assessment and education regarding your lung function and breathing patterns.  Corrective exercise will involve learning to breathe with your diaphragm and relaxation techniques.  A tool called the Spirotiger (see physiology lab) can provide specific resistance training for the diaphragm to help you breathe, improving your lung function and endurance.

Privately funded exercise rehabilitation can involve as many supervised sessions as you feel you require but typically involve 1-2 sessions under complete supervision for you to familiarise yourself with the exercises.  When we are satisfied that you are performing exercises correctly you can carry out sessions independently either at BodyLab, your home, in the gym you usually attend or on the sports field.  It is usually critical to come back for a visit after two weeks to check on your technique and progress.  As you make improvement you will need to be reassessed and your programme modified and updated.  This can occur as regularly as is needed and your consultant will guide you on timeframes appropriate to your needs.

Programmes funded by a third party (ie. insurance company) require two supervised sessions per week for a minimum period of six weeks.  At completion of your programme you will have a regime that you can continue with independently.  We have a contract with ACC for Activity Based Programmes and work with other insurance companies which require a similar rehabilitation service  A referral from a case manager is necessary for this funding to be achieved.

BodyLab provides a friendly, quiet atmosphere where you can focus on your rehabilitation.  We are still finishing our new developments and hope to have an area completed soon for you to relax after your session and refuel or meet with others.  Shower and change facilities are available.  We offer flexible appointment times being open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday.
