The lab has been set up to cater for several different groups of people. These include the serious recreational athlete, particularly runners and cyclists and any sport that involves running. This group will be particularly interested in our VO2max gas analysis testing, along with lactate threshold analysis. It will also benefit anyone who wants to find out an accurate measurement of their cardiovascular capacity. Our system is calibrated against a calibration gas and gives us results which are within a 3 percent margin of error.
We can also help people who are overweight or obese with use of our resting metabolism gas analysis system. Weight issues can be the result of low resting metabolism. Measurement of this has not been readily available until now. Once we know if low resting metabolism is an issue we can provide guidance to change this.
People with chronic lung function problems (eg. chronic asthmatics) will benefit from our lung function testing service and lung function training service (Spirotiger). Endurance training of respiratory muscles has also been shown to improve performance in athletes. Click the Spirotiger button for more details.
Cyclists will benefit from the Velotron training sessions with its spinscan programme (see how much force you put through each pedal revolution), 3D virtual training rides and power crank system (independently operated cranks). The power (watts) measured on this system gives us numbers which have a 1.5 percent margin of error.
Anthropometry is about the measurement of humans. It includes skinfolds, girth measurements and bones breaths and lengths. Anyone wanting to monitor changes in their body composition and shape will benefit from this service. Athletes can also benefit from comparing their own body type (somatotype) with the typical body type of different athlete groups. International measurement standards (ISAK) for this service are maintained and includes a minimum of two measurements per site.
